1. Progress Theatre's "PEACHES" - Friday, February 23, 2007, 8:00pm
Sponsored Performance for the International Symposium on the Arts in Society
Location: Abrons Arts Center at Henry Street Settlement, 466 Grand Street, Manhattan, NY
Tickets: US$10.00 for Arts Symposium Attendees
Hailed by NYC Show Business Weekly as "astonishly vivid," Progress Theatre is a nationally acclaimed touring ensemble founded by NYU Alumni committed to using art as activism to encourage social consciousness, cross-community dialogue and cultural awareness. This ensemble of multi-disciplined performers produces bold, moving theatre engaging topics from African American culture to Muslim American identity, from HIV/ AIDS to race and gender relations, from academia to pop-culture and more to explore the social concerns of today's young adult generation. PEACHES, their signature, break-out piece is the sponsored entertainment event of the International Symposium on the Arts in Society.
Inspired in part by Nina Simone's classic song, "Four Women," PEACHES spans time from slavery to present-day American society, confronting long-standing stereotypes of African American female identity through a series of lively, thought-provoking, moving and, at times, humorous vignettes. Alluding to academic and popular discourse on race in America, PEACHES features an unforgettable musical score ranging from Negro Spirituals to blues to R&B; while blending poetic essay, social commentary, traditional and nontraditional theatre into a piece that presents a rich, complicated portrait of Black female experiences in contemporary America.
